VIEWS OF AND FROM
THE SIXTH STREET VIADUCT...OLD AND NEW
This series of images are from years of documenting the original 6th Street Viaduct bridge and the rebuilding and completion of the replacement bridge. The bridges are two-thirds of a mile long and connect East Los Angeles to DTLA.
The original bridge was built in 1932 in Los Angeles California, this bridge can be seen in many commercials, T.V. shows, and countless movies. The "Sixth Street Bridge" has become a beloved jewel of Los Angeles. In 2008 the bridge was designated as Los Angeles Historic Monument #905. Sadly, the bridge was closed on January 27, 2016. It was found that the bridge had structural problems and was deemed unsafe. The bridge was scheduled for demolition shortly after that.
The new bridge was rebuilt at a cost of $588 million. The design of the new bridge was created by HNTB and Los Angeles architect Michael Maltzan who was selected by the Bureau of engineering through an international design competition. The construction was led by contractors Skanska Stacy and Witbeck.
After more than six years of being closed the newly built Sixth Street, now known as "The Ribbon of Light" was opened to the public on July 10, 2022.
I hope you enjoy my images as much as I enjoyed taking them!
